Urban Jiu-jitsu Rules
Security
Do not pull your training partners backwards, putting undue pressure on the knees. Pull your partners to the side instead.
Avoid distractions when sparring.
Do not jump high in the air and land hard on your opponent’s back from an elevated position. Use technique rather than brute force. If you are landing on someone’s face or neck from a cartwheel pass; for example, quickly fix the pass or use a different one.
Inform your instructor or training partner of injuries before sparring. (If your injuries are extensive, people may not want to train, so another solution may be required).
Training under the influence will not be tolerated.
Do not attack fingers or toes, pull hair, bite, gouge, fish-hook, nor apply neck cranks or slams.
Follow belt specific techniques as listed by international organizations. For example, wristlocks are listed as blue-belt techniques and knee-bars are listed as brown belt techniques in the gi. You will learn these techniques at scheduled points, but do not apply them in sparring before you acquire the appropriate belt (or you are training under the appropriate no-gi level) unless given permission by your instructor or training partner, depending on the situation.
Avoid brute force when applying submissions.
Release immediately on a tap (physical or verbal) and tap quickly in any risky situation to avoid injury.

______________________________________ ________________________________________ Brazilian jiu jitsu is safe but no sport is perfect. Our Brazilian jiu jitsu school in Oakville focus on safety.
Competitions can often increase learning speed for anyone, and they can be exciting and engaging. Nevertheless, individuals are different. In South Korea, there is a beginners’ category even before the normal white belt competition level. Some students compete after only six weeks of training, but this only suits a select few. Most have to slowly prepare themselves for the task with instruction on rules, strategy, pacing, and security (truly helpful training will be provided for those who wish to compete as the owner has competed in 160 tournaments at open weight/absolute). Sufficient engaged training will allow people to be excited about tournaments and use them as a positive learning experience. Urban Jiu-Jitsu Canada will never push students into competing nor pressure them to perform well. There are different paths to promotion and success for both competitors and non-competitors. Brazilian jiu jitsu competitions are joyful, but even joyful events require preparation.
Nevertheless, our competition training program is designed to help you prepare for martial arts competitions at the regional, national, and international levels if anyone chooses this path. . Our experienced coaches will work with you to develop your skills, strategy, and mindset, and help you achieve your goals. Visit our lovely Brazilian jiu jitsu school in Oakville.
