Professor Barron is a six time professor of the year award winner at Sungkyunkwan University. He often contemplated opening a jiu-jitsu academy due to his quiet conviction that jiu jitsu can improve people’s lives in various ways if taught from well set out perspectives. However, he loved teaching university students, so he waited. Worldwide competition among universities due to sheer drops in birthrates and a few other insights later convinced him it was finally time to try sharing his interpretation of jiu jitsu. A lifelong martial artist, Professor Barron started wrestling at the age of seven in Canada and continued far into university. A veteran of almost 200 wrestling tournaments, he considers some of his best efforts to include a third place finish at the North American folk championships and a fourth place at the world freestyle championships. He also simultaneously trained judo at certain points and medaled in more than thirty judo tournaments. He later earned a black belt in Karate (his best ever finish a silver medal at a world championship) and continued to train Karate while studying negotiation and linguistics in Freiburg Germany. A student of education and linguistics at Saint Mary’s University at another point, Professor Barron has won 6 other teachers/instructor of the year awards in subjects ranging from kids’ karate and kindergarten sport to business presentation. He earned his third degree black belt in Taekwando in South Korea under the direction of Kyunghee University after earning a Master’s Degree in Philosophy and Journalism from Carleton University in Canada. Professor Barron earned a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu under strict standards after training six days a week for more than a decade. He equally trained both the self-defense and sport elements of jiu-jitsu, and his academy offers classes in both. He feels that jiu jitsu (starting from a standing position) is the best option for self defense because it can allow for control without the level of damage caused by striking and joint manipulation (except in severe circumstances). As for sport, Professor Barron has been competing in jiu jitsu for thirteen years and includes entry in 160 absolute/open weight categories as part of his experience. He includes a silver medal at Rickson Cup, gold at Jager’s Cup‘ in the Philippines, bronze and gold medals at the Abu Dhabu World Grand Slam series, and gold at Dumau International among his many delightful memories. His passion for jiu jitsu led him to this place, and he invites you to come share in that passion by trying out some of the aspects of jiu jitsu today at Urban Jiu Jitsu Canada.
