• Urban Jiu-jitsu Canada embraces a hybrid of traditional martial values and modern values of global engagement in assisting students to embrace well-being, stand up for themselves or others in any scenario as needed, and enjoy themselves in achieving any communicated target such as camaraderie or tournament entry. 
• In response to the claim by famous fighters such as Rickson Gracie that modern jiu-jitsu is becoming diluted, Urban Jiu-jitsu reminds students to develop resilience and discover a sense of self. The founder of Gracie jiu-jitsu, Helio Gracie, promoted the idea of a weaker person using personal efficiency, leverage, and technique for protection in overcoming brute force. Students who are resilient enough to learn concepts such as weight distribution and grip control can learn to defend themselves in a variety of situations. This resilience is aided by a discovery of self. Kids have inner recesses of strength they must explore, teenagers must learn to forge identity through the chaos, some women can learn that it is perfectly okay to showcase physical or spiritual strength, and some individuals can realize that it is possible to control ego or to not allow emotion to overtake intelligence. It is the paradoxically complex and simplistic nature of jiu-jitsu that allows one to discover oneself in different ways. However, one must also be realistic in expectations in the discovery of self and enhancement of resilience. While jiu-jitsu can be adapted for all sizes and ages, one must be aware that not all techniques suit all body types, so it is better to understand martial concepts instead and practice with those ideas in mind. Secondly, ten years in age or ten kilos in weight difference roughly equate to one full level of skill. In other words, if someone is much younger or much heavier, it is possible to control them, but it will require a high level of precision in technique, highly controlled use of energy, or a well practiced strategy. 
• Additionally, past martial artists looked upon their skills as a way of defending those who were too weak to defend themselves.
